Kootenay River
Know as the Kootenay River in Canada and by the Ktunaxa Nation, and as the Kootenai in the United States and by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and Kootenai Tribe of Idaho.
Fed mainly by glaciers and snowmelt, The Kootenay is a major river of the Northwest Plateau in southeastern British Columbia, and northern Montana and Idaho in the United States. It is one of the uppermost major tributaries of the Columbia River, the largest North American river that empties into the Pacific Ocean.
The Ktunaxa were the first people to live along the Kootenay River. For hundreds of years, they hunted and fished on the river, quite isolated from neighboring tribes. In the 19th century, Canadian explorer David Thompson became the first recorded European to reach the Kootenay and established trading posts throughout the region.
Traveling 60km of river, isolated landscape with rugged canyons and waterfalls scattered with wildlife is to be expected on this isolated portion of the Kootenay River, holding the stories of its early years.
White River
The White River is a major headwater tributary of the Kootenay River in southeastern British Columbia, and drains into the Kootenay River east of Canal Flats.
Originating in Sylvan Pass, a glacial basin in Height of the Rockies Provincial Park, It flows southwards through a deep valley along the Park Ranges, then swings southwest to receive the North Fork from the right. Our Trip starts where the river meets Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park and ends in Canal Flats, approximately 57km of river.
The White is a Class III flowing glacial river and can be up to 60 metres wide. The river’s drainage basin of some 987 square kilometres and consists almost entirely of virgin forest. There are no diversions or dams, just solitude.
